Sophie Ballantine Hawkins is an American singer, songwriter, musician and artist. Born in New York, she attended the Manhattan School of Music for a year as a percussionist before moving on to pursue a career in music. She achieved critical and commercial success with her first two albums, spawning a number of hits including "Dam I Wish I Was Your Lover", "Right Beside You" and "As I Lay. Me Down". However, a dispute with the Sony Music label over her third album, Timbre, led her to start her own independent company, Trumpet Swan Productions, which released her follow-up records. Hawkins is a vegetarian and longtime animal rights and environmental advocate. She is also a leading political and social activist, championing events that promote women in music and LGBT rights. In 2008, she endorsed Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
